Article 458 of freenet.sci.comp.atari.news:
From: aa700@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Michael Current)
Subject: DCM2ATR 1.4 is available
Date: 19 Oct 1996 22:23:20 GMT

 Date: Wed, 04 Oct 1995 08:08:26 GMT
 From: cmwagner@gate.net (Chad Wagner)

DCM2ATR is now available via ftp from
ftp://ftp.gate.net/pub/users/cmwagner/msdos/atari/dcmatr14.zip for DOS
users or
ftp://ftp.gate.net/pub/users/cmwagner/msdos/atari/dcmatr14.tar.gz for
UNIX users.

A important bug was fixed that is likely causing corrupted images, it
is important that you grab this and update your version. The bug will
not damage your disk, or the original files, but it will create
worthless disk images, and I hate to think that someone is out there
getting pissed off because none of these archives work.

So please grab the latest version, I am not sure if this has been an
inherent bug in the program and has just been discovered or if it was
created with 1.3, but this is the first I have heard of it, and thanks
to Mike White (lovegrov@student.umass.edu) it was fixed, and he also
provided the new routine to fix the problem, which I have no idea why
I didn't approach it the way he did. That is one of the reasons I
like to make source code available to the public, they can see things
that I may not.

Grab the latest version, 1.4, and Mike has also said that he will be
providing an Macintosh version, so if your interested in a Macintosh
version then follow-up to this thread and he will probably get
involved. His version is based on 1.3 with his bug fix so it is
essentially version 1.4 but is a Mac version, I am going to provide
the program also at the same ftp site, probably as:

ftp://ftp.gate.net/pub/users/cmwagner/msdos/atari/dcmatr13.sit.hqx for
Macintosh users. Please get ahold of it and you may send me reports
of bugs, and I will probably forward them to him, if they relate to
the Macintosh, but with version 1.5, hopefully, I will have a version
that will compile under Macintosh based on code written by Mike, but
this bug was so important that I could wait to incorporate it and join
the two as version 1.4.

(that archive may not be available, for Mac, right away, so if you
can't find it, check back in a day or so, I will probably have it on
after an hour or so of the time stamp on this message)

Subject: "POOLDISK" CD-ROM for Atari XL/XE
Date: 19 Oct 1996 22:29:34 GMT

 Date: 2 Nov 1995 02:49:53 GMT
 From: "Ernest.R.Schreurs" <ernest@pi.net>
Subject: 2000 ATR PD/Shareware images for use with SIO2PC/APE/Xformer on one CD

We are happy to announce the availability of the "POOLDISK" CD-rom
for the Atari XL/XE computer. This CD contains the contents of
over 2000 diskettes. Everything is stored in the ATR format as used
by SIO2PC and APE. This is also compatible with the format used by
the Xformer. There are some 250 Megabytes of ATR images on the CD.
To accomodate the Atari ST users, all images are also stored in the
XFD format as used by the ST-Xformer. This occupies another 250 Mb.
These disks include over 250 diskettes from ABBUC, and over 330 from
the BELLCOM PD library. There are also lots of disks from usergroups,
magazines and disk magazines. The Umich.edu 8-bit archive has also
been converted to the ATR format and is now stored in over 500 disk
image files. There are also some files not in ATR format on the disk,
for those that want to try and write an ISO-9660 driver for the XL/XE.
Until someone manages that, you need a PC or an Atari ST to act as
a server for your Classic Atari, or one of the emulators. The
remaining 100 meg of the CD is filled with 165 pictures from various
Atari 8-bit systems and peripherals. This CD is now available from us
for US $ 35, which includes shipping by the cheapest possible rate,
which may take over two weeks. Send a check drawn on an US bank to:
Ernest R. Schreurs
Kempenlandstraat 8
5211 VN Den Bosch
The Netherlands
Make checks payable to Ernest R. Schreurs. Do not fotget to mention
the mailing address, so we know where to send the CD to.
If you cannot send a check, US $ 35 in cash is acceptable too, but then
it is your own risk. If the money does not arrive, we will not know
that you sent any. If the check or the money gets here, we will ship
the CD as soon as possible. A few notes: some of the disks are in
German, Polish or Dutch. As far as we know, everything on the disk is
Public Domain or Shareware, except for the Pokey Magazines and the
Mega-Magazines, which are on the CD by permission, and are restricted
from further copying. You are responsible for whatever is copied off
the CD, if we accidentally placed anything on the CD that is not PD.
If the Jewel box cracks during shipping, this is your own risk. After
all, a new one costs under $1.
If you have any questions, send an E-mail to ernest@pi.net

 Subject: Uploaded: Atari800-0.2.7.tar.gz

I have just uploaded version 0.2.7 of the Atari 800 emulator for
Unix (and Amiga) to the following location:-

ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/emulators/atari/Atari800-0.2.7.tar.gz

Changes in 0.2.7
----------------

- Renamed atari_h_device.c to a more general devices.c
- Emulator (private) opcode ESCRTS ($d2) added to support patching of OS.
- Printer device supported via Unix lpr command.
- Moved from RCS to CVS and added rcs Id keyword to all C files.
- Emulated OS: Better handling of Keyboard and ATASCII to screen
code conversion. Editor uses LMARGN, RMARGN, ROWCRS and COLCRS.
- Many other changes to EmuOS including implementation of SETVBV
  COLDSV and WARMSV.
- Detection of X11 server supporting the MIT Shared Memory Extension in
  preperation for shared memory pixmaps.
- Corrected bug in H: device (filename extraction routine).

Changes in 0.2.6
----------------

- Corrected calculation of number of sectors and reading of double
density ATR files (Thanks to Preston Crow)
- Correction for Linux ELF systems.
- XVIEW and NAS work under Linux/ELF
- Default directory for XVIEW Disk File Chooser is set within the
Makefile. By default it is pointing to /usr/local/lib/atari/DISKS
- Corrected bug in Missile 0 to Playfield collision detection.
- Corrected WSYNC bug (multiple stores to WSYNC during one scanline).
  River Raid now runs correctly.
- -emuos to enable emulated operating system. Users without the
necessary atari OS ROMs can use this option to boot disk images/ROMs.
Currently this is very experimental and runs very little without
problems. Defender runs perfectly but if you haven't got the OS it's
unlikely you'll be able to get this either!
- H0: device accesses the current directory on your Unix Machine.
- H1: through H4: can access four directories specified either within
the Makefile or via the -H1, -H2, -H3 and -H4 command line options.
By default they are set to /usr/local/lib/atari/Hx where x is 1, 2,
  3 or 4.
- H5: through H9: duplicate H0 through H4 but have automatic ATASCII
to ASCII translation. They are not suitable for binary files.
- All files accessed via the H: device have Unix filenames consisting
  entirely of lowercase letters.

We don't give up! Once again we arrange NAS for all Atari lovers. Last year
gave us the taste for it, thanks to all the visitors that gave
us feedback. This year we're helped by the party elite second to none;
NoCrew! The exhabition part is also much better. We look forward to three days
full of activity and excitement. Here's a little taster. More
information will be out as soon as we know more.

                   CocaCola-drinking etc)

*When:* 14-15-16 of June *Where:* Lundby Gymnasium in Gvteborg, Sweden

Fees: Payment: SAK member: Non member:_

We will, of course, be selling T-shirts or pins at the show.

INFORMATION FOR EXHIBITORS

If you want to join the exhibition on NAS you must pay the
exhibitors fee of 1000 SEK on our postal giro 491 75 44 - 1 before
the 31th of May. The area is 3x3 meters. Non-commercial organisations
can join the exhibition for free.

A maximum 2 persons per company and 1 person per non-commercial
organisation is included in the fee (which includes entrance to the
hacker convent).

Please state your contact person on the postal giro paper.

Since the canteen - that we plan to give the exhibition in - is not the
biggest in the world the bootsize will be limited. However the size of
your boot will be at least 9sqm. If you wishes to have a bigger boot
you should contact us to get specialprizes. Bigger boot will be given
as far as the limited space allows it.

"The boot" will be a couple of dining tables plus a suitable amount of
chairs that you can have at your disposal. A good thing is to bring
white bedsheets or tablecloth of paper to cover the tables.
It's quit gran. A big sign with the companys logo on is recomended too.

We like to remind you that we can't help you in the same way as a real
exhibitionservice at a normal exhibition even though we ofcourse will
do our very best to support the exhibitors in every way.

The exhibition will have these opening-hours:

friday 14 juni 12.00 - 21.00
saturday 15 juni 09.00 - 21.00

Subject: PC Xformer 3.3 now available
Date: 21 Oct 1996 16:11:00 GMT

 Date: 1 Dec 1995 17:20:57 GMT
 From: brasoft@coho.halcyon.com (Darek Mihocka)

Tomorrow, PC Xformer 3.3 goes on sale at the Toad Atarifest and will
be available next week from Atari dealers in Europe as well. I have
just put up a new demo version of PC Xformer that is in sync with
version 3.3. It is up on the PC Xformer web page at

  http://www.halcyon.com/brasoft/

Look in the file download area to download xf33demo.zip

This new demo replaces PC Xformer 2.0 and 2.5 which were based on old
source code and don't make for a good demo any more.

PC Xformer 3.3 is now the world's fastest Atari 8-bit emulator, with
support for player missile graphics, display list interrupts, GTIA
graphics, and both Atari 800 and XL/XE emulation modes.

On a 90 Mhz Pentium it runs at about 10 times the speed of a 130XE,
although there is the option to slow the emulator down to normal speed
to make certain games more playable.

As before, PC Xformer 3.3 costs $34.95. We've re-written the manual
for PC Xformer 3.3 to make it easier to read and it now includes new
demos and file transfer utilities not included before.

Subject: MUX Window, from New Breed Software
Date: 21 Oct 1996 16:15:56 GMT

 Date: 5 Dec 1995 05:26:57 GMT
 From: kendrick@zippy.sonoma.edu (William Kendrick)

By Spring 1996, New Breed Software will release "MUX Window", a windowing
system based on the X Window System.

Using a number of Atari 8-bits (400/800/XL/XE series) connected together
in a Local Area Network with the "Multiplexer" ("MUX" for short) from
Computer Software Services, this system presents a Client/Server scenario
similar to X.

The existing software uses a networkless model (the Window Manager / Server
are INCLUDEd within the Clients) and has proven to be most satisfactory
(albeit quickly running low on free RAM!)

For more information and (currently out of data) source code (in Action!,
an extremely fast, high level compiled language), please look here on the
World Wide Web:

  http://zippy.sonoma.edu/~kendrick/nbs/ados/

Note: This system is NOT emulating the X Window system. However, it would
be relatively simple to replace the Window Manager / Server GUI with a program
which intercepts MUX-Window calls, translates them to the X Window protocol,
and sends them to an X Terminal. It would also be possible (not nearly as
simple, or as useful) to set up a MUX Window WM/Server as an extremely
scaled down X Terminal! Ah, but to dream. :)

Thank you.

Subject: How To Upgrade to PC Xformer 3.3 For Dummies Vol. 1
Date: 21 Oct 1996 16:23:28 GMT

 Date: 11 Dec 1995 23:54:34 GMT
 From: brasoft@coho.halcyon.com (Darek Mihocka)

It would seem a lot of people are having problems with what should be a
rather trivial exercise. I've read several posts today from people
claiming that a) their email to Branch Always Software goes unanswered,
and b) their attempt to download the PC Xformer 3.3 upgrade from our web
page fails.

Given that I reply to about 20 or 30 pieces of email each day, it seems
there are those people who are mailing the right place and those that
are not. The correct email address for Branch Always Software is:

  brasoft@halcyon.com

This has been our email address for most of the year and will continue
to be for some time to come. IF YOU ARE NOT SENDING EMAIL TO THIS
ACCOUNT, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A REPLY. Do not send email to our old
America Online or Compuserve accounts. I terminated those months ago and
mail sent to those old accounts goes into a black hole. America Online,
being the assholes they are, keep the account around and don't send
email back to the sender to indicate that the account is terminated.
This is probably the most common cause of unresponded to email.

To upgrade to PC Xformer 3.3 over the Internet, you simply need to do
two things. Mail in the Product Registration Card that came with your
PC Xformer package. Most people forget to do that. Second, browse our
web page and fill out a comment form and request access to the
registered users download section. In this form, you must include your
full name and mailing address as it appeared on your registration card,
plus you must specify a one word USERID and one word PASSWORD to use.
It's very much like logging in to Unix itself. Once you send the form,
you will have download access within a day or two. That's all you need
to do.

Common reasons why people don't get granted access: they are not
registered users, they did not specify a userid or password, or they
specify a multiple word userid or password.

If you do not already own PC Xformer 3.0 or higher, you obviously can't
upgrade online. You need to purchase the product first. To purchase PC
Xformer, you go to an Atari dealer such as Toad Computers here in the
U.S., Micro Discount in England, or KE-Soft in Germany, or the ABBUC
user group in Germany, and order PC Xformer 3.3 for $34.95. Then mail in
the registration card and follow the directions already described.

This isn't rocket science folks! In order to avoid forcing everyone to
mail money in and wait to receive upgrades to PC Xformer, I am making
available this online method of upgrading. From the messages I'm
reading, and the bogus comment forms I've received so far, it would seem
that this may be too challenging for some people. Either they can't read
English, or they are simply idiots, I don't know. But in any case, if
people are finding it too difficult to upgrade online, then for future
PC Xformer upgrades we'll go back to the "old" way of doing things using
snail mail.

For those who can't find their way around the Internet, snail mail
upgrade notices for PC Xformer 3.3 as well as for the PC Xformer Cable are
going to be mailed out to all registered users of PC Xformer in the next few
weeks and you will have the option to upgrade by snail mail. Watch your
mailboxes in early January.

Subject: PC Xformer cables - status
Date: 21 Oct 1996 16:27:03 GMT

 Date: 12 Dec 1995 00:08:54 GMT
 From: brasoft@coho.halcyon.com (Darek Mihocka)

Just to update everyone, right now I've received about 35 advance orders
for the PC Xformer cables. Since that's getting close to "critical mass",
I've gone and placed an order for parts to make about 50 of the cables.
I expect to receive the parts and start making cables over the holidays
later this month, UPS willing, and cables should be ready for sale some
time in January. The cost of the cables will be $24.95.

If you're interested in a cable, email me so that I make sure to have
enough parts. It's easy to order extra parts now, but once I receive the
parts and the cables get made I won't be ordering any more parts for a
while. Making cables is not something I care to turn into a full time
hobby! :-)

As for the questions I've left unanswered such as "how much will
shipping be to Germany?" or "will there be a package price for PC
Xformer and the cable?" or "were any animals harmed during the
manufacturing of the cable?" etc, I don't know. When I find out shipping
costs and bundle pricing, I'll post that information on the web page.

Article 471 of freenet.sci.comp.atari.news:
From: aa700@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Michael Current)
Subject: MAE 1.0
Date: 21 Oct 1996 16:35:27 GMT

 Date: Fri, 26 Jan 1996 21:21:07 GMT
 From: jharris@cybergate.com (John Harris)

Thank you to everyone who has been patiently waiting for the MAE assembler
1.0 release. Things are getting very close to being ready, and I think the
results will be well worth the wait. The project really snowballed as I
kept wanting to improve "just-one-more-thing", and now after some really
major changes, it's almost finished. Special thanks to Glenn Saunders and
Kent DeGroff, who sent Shareware donations even though I hadn't officially
asked for them. This was largely responsible for providing the motivation
for all the extra work. Special thanks also to Itay Chamiel who provided
me with high-speed 64 column and 80 column text drivers.

Here's a partial list of what has been done recently:

New memory configuration which uses up to three banks of extended RAM,
doubles the symbol table size, ups the source buffer to almost 40K, and
reduces MAE's main memory usage to only $B700-$BBFF. The region from
$4000-$7FFF in main memory is now completely free, and you can assemble
object code into memory there, or whatever else you might want.

MAE comes with 64 and 80 column software drivers that work on a Gr.8
screen. Both drivers are _far_ quicker than working with the XEP80, and if
your banked RAM supports ANTIC banking, it won't reduce the size of your
source text buffer at all! (But will use $5600-$7FFF of the above
mentioned free memory area). The 64 column mode in particular is very nice
looking on a monochrome or split-video monitor.

The native 40 column mode, and also the 64 column handler, both support
horizontal scrolling out to 80 column line widths.

Completed 24-bit support, 65816 opcodes, and 16-bit operands in the
debugger.

Everything is faster. Assembly speed is up to twice as fast, the editor is
faster, and the debugger is significantly faster in some operations.

Storage requirements for local labels have been reduced, which saved an
additional 25% on the symbol table size in some of my source files. This
will make it easier to assemble larger source files without reconfiguring
memory.

Macro processing has been completely rewritten, and is much more flexible.
It now passes parameters as full ASCII strings, which makes a huge
improvement over what you can do with macros.

After marking a block in the editor, you can press Ctrl-; to comment or
uncomment the lines. (It adds or removes ";" characters at the start of
each line).

The editor can move labels up or down to adjacent lines, or move lines up
and down relative to surrounding lines.

Many more new features and bug fixes. I'm really happy with the way it
turned out.

Article 474 of freenet.sci.comp.atari.news:
From: aa700@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Michael Current)
Subject: Atari Corp and JTS Corp to Merge (press release)
Date: 23 Oct 1996 01:16:03 GMT

ATARI CORPORATION AND JTS CORPORATION TO MERGE
Expands company interests to growing disk drive market

SUNNYVALE, Calif., February 13, 1996 -- Atari Corporation (AMEX: ATC) and JTS
Corporation today agreed to merge the two companies. Atari is the pioneer in
multimedia video entertainment and JTS is a manufacturer of computer disk
drives.

"This merger puts us in a great position to capitalize on a very experienced
management team and a rapidly growing disk drive market. JTS is using
innovative technology, particularly in the 3" disk drive market, and we are
excited about its prospects," said Jack Tramiel, Chairman of Atari.

"Our partnership gives us the ability to expand our capabilities and pursue
new opportunities," said Tom Mitchell, president and chief executive officer
of JTS. "Dataquest has predicted that 115 million disk drive units will be
shipped worldwide in 1996, and it is a great time for us to be participating
in this market," said Mitchell.

Terms of the Agreement

Under the terms of the agreement, the new corporation will operate under the
name of JTS Corporation and the officers of JTS will become the officers of
the merged company. The Atari entertainment business and the JTS disk drive
business will operate as separate divisions of the new merged company.

Atari has extended a bridge loan to JTS in the amount of $25,000,000. In the
event that the merger is not consummated, the bridge loan will be convertible
into shares of JTS Series A Preferred Stock at the option of Atari or JTS and
subject to certain conditions.

As a result of the transaction, Atari stockholders will hold approximately 60%
of the outstanding shares of the new company following the merger. The
transaction is structured to qualify as a tax-free reorganization and will be
accounted for as a purchase.

The board of directors of Atari and JTS have approved the definitive
agreement. The merger is subject to certain shareholder and regulatory
approvals and other conditions to closing. The parties anticipate the
transaction will close toward the end of the second calendar quarter of 1996.

JTS Management Team

JTS was formed in 1994 by Jugi Tandon, the company's current chairman of the
board. Tandon is well-known in the computer storage industry for his ability
to develop innovative products for the marketplace. Tandon will remain
chairman of the board of the new company.

Tom Mitchell was a cofounder of Seagate Technology and president and chief
operations officer of both Seagate and Conner Peripherals. Mitchell brings
unparalleled industry and operational experience in the high-volume disk drive
market. He is a pioneer in disk drive manufacturing in Singapore, Thailand,
China and India.

About Atari Corporation

For more than twenty years, Atari has provided consumers with high-quality,
value-priced entertainment. Atari markets Jaguar, the only American-made,
advanced 64-bit entertainment system and licenses and markets software in the
multi-platform, multimedia market. Atari is located in Sunnyvale, California.

About JTS Corporation

Founded in 1994, JTS Corporation develops and manufactures hard disk drives
for the computer industry. JTS has recently introduced its new 3" Nordic
product for the portable computer market. Headquartered in San Jose,
California, with manufacturing facilities in Madras, India, JTS employs 1,300
people worldwide.

The above statements regarding the disk drive industry and JTS' prospects are
forward looking statements and involve a number of risks and uncertainties.
Among the factors that would cause actual results to differ materially are the
following: business conditions and growth in the portable computer industry
and in the general economy; competitive factors, including pricing pressures;
availability of components from third parties; risks associated with
manufacturing of products in India or other overseas jurisdictions and risks
associated with JTS' ability to ramp its manufacturing operations, including
cost and yield issues.

Changes to the new version:

* A browser used for loading images;
* Enhanced density support includes creating, adding, deleting
  and extracting;
* Convert existing single density disks to enhanced density

Subject: Old computers magazine!
Date: 23 Oct 1996 01:43:07 GMT

 From: historical@aol.com (Historical)
 Date: 17 Jun 1996 05:51:07 -0400

Some people collect stamps, baseball cards, dolls and even cars -
but, did you know that there is a group for people who collect computers!
The Historical Computer Society is an international user group for old
computer enthusiasts ("old computers" and/or "old enthusiasts"). Issue #9
of "Historically Brewed" is now out and shipping! Our biggest and I think
overall best issue yet. It contains an exclusive interview with Ed
Roberts, creator of the MITS Altair computer! Also, the final installment
of the excellent DEC pdp-8 history. "The Internet and Computer History",
"For the Collector", "Remembering Gary Kildall", Collecting home and
arcade video machines, letters, member stories, comics and more!
The Society is dedicated to preserving older and classic computer
hardware, software and literature while educating and helping it's members
as well as the general public. The Society and it's magazine were started
in the pioneering spirit of the early computer clubs. One of the most
famous groups was the Homebrew Computer Club from the San Francisco Bay
area started in March of 1975. No other single organization helped to
spawn more of today's computer legends than did Homebrew. This is why the
name "Historically Brewed" was chosen for the magazine.
Computer history nostalgia is now available to all buffs of "antique"
computing everywhere. Many people have fond memories of their early
computing days. Never has another device evolved so rapidly as to produce
nostalgic artifacts in less than a quarter of a century! "Historically
Brewed" is a forum for these people to meet and share their stories.
The Historical Computer Society intends to become the authority in
the community of retired personal computers. Hundreds of old computers are
thrown out everyday by Americans as junk, but HCS believes that these
outmoded machines have value. HCS can help owners find answers about
system operation, peripherals, software, books, magazines and service.
"Historically Brewed" is ready to become the premier circular for
information, classifieds and trading of outdated equipment, etc. New
subscriptions in the U.S. are only $14 a year or try an issue for only $3;
subscriptions in Canada are $16 and $20 international. HB is sold at The
Computer Museum in Boston, the American Computer Museum in Bozeman,
Montana and at Smithsonian Book Stores, Washington, DC. HCS, 3649 Herschel
Street, Jacksonville, FL 32205. Best, David Greelish, President, HCS

I am happy to announce the launch of the Digital Antic Project. Antic
magazine was the premiere magazine devoted to 8-bit Atari computers.
Antic, like the 8-bit Atari, has been forgotten by all but a small
minority...

The Digital Antic Project is a small crusade to put all of the old issues
of Antic (and eventually its sister magazine, STart) on the Internet. I
have received permission from the publisher of Antic to make the material
available on the Internet for free.

The site currently features the complete text of the first two issues, as
well as cover art and memorable ads from the magazine. More material will
be added as time permits -- faster if YOU volunteer to help by scanning,
HTMLizing, or proofreading.

The site is at http://www.northcoast.com/savetz/antic/dap.html

Amiga Binary for the above emulator.

Superman
Disk image containing an unfinished version of the VCS Superman
for the Atari 800 series. Includes GIF.

Alien Encounter
Disk image containing a crap game (well by todays standards) I
wrote in 1984/85. Sort of a cross between space invaders and
        centipede. Includes GIF.

UltraSpeed Copier 2.3
Disk copier that uses the US Doubler Ultra Speed I/O. Copies
Single, Duel and Double density disks. Can copy disks formatted
without special format using Ultra Speed. Includes GIF.

1050 Menu 2.2
Multiboot program written for the 1050 drive. Yes I know a
lot of you prefer DOS files, but I've uploaded it for those
        that don't :-) Includes GIF.

Test Computer Language
A small compiler I wrote in 1985/86 and used to write Enigmatix!
published by Page 6. Compiles programs to DOS binary files or
direct to a BOOT disk. Also contains a RUN mode which compiles
and RUNs the program in memory. The language is block structured
and supports procedures, functions, while loop, repeat until
loops, if statements etc. The compiled code can be used in
VBI and DLI Interrupts. WEB page contains semi-finished HTML
User Guide (HTML not index correctly yet!) and a few example
programs (Breakout, 8way scrolling, Interrupt driven music).
Hopefully its not too low level for the remaining 8bit die
hards ;-) This is probably not what you want if you've only
        used Atari BASIC. Includes GIF.

Oops, on reading this again it doesn't say what I meant :-( I wrote the
compiler and my *brother* used it to write Enigmatix! There my

From: David Firth <david@signus.demon.co.uk>

I've just uploaded Atari800-0.5.0.tar.gz onto my web page
located at:-

        http://www.signus.demon.co.uk/david/atari/atari.html

You can also obtain an Amiga binary version at the same location. It
requires an A1200. The Amiga version is currently 0.4.5. If you've
got a C compiler and the resources you should be able compile 0.5.0
yourself - Hopefully I'll be able to upload a new binary shortly.

Changes in 0.5.0
----------------

- Simplified interface to CPU module.
- DIRECT_VIDEO now works with PMG collision detection. This option
increases performance by about 28% but can result in different colours
being displayed. This is because this option relies on COLPF0, COLPF1,
COLPF2, COLPF3 and COLBK all having different values, hence the
emulator sometimes modifies the colours :-( This option can be enabled
  during the configuration phase.
- Correction to ANTIC Mode 5 Vertical Scrolling.
- Correction to PMG DMA Code - Demon Attack now works OK.
- Added code to limit the emulator to 50fps - this will not have any
effect if your machine can't run the emulator greater than 50fps.
F10 in X11, XVIEW, MOTIF and SVGALIB versions toggles the limit
on/off. When the limit is off the emulator will go as fast as it can.
- Path to directory containing the OS ROM images is now defined during
the configuration phase (Declaration of ATARI_LIBRARY has been removed
  from the Makefile).
- Correction to handling of PMG DMA - Pitfall II now Works.
- The unused bits in PMBASE are now ignored correcting errors in Atari
  Chess and Frogger.

Subject: Melbourne House games now free for distribution

From: Fredrik Ekman <ekman@lysator.liu.se>
Date: 18 Aug 1996 18:00:40 +0200

In case anyone still cares about copyrights for old games, I would like
to forward a message I just got from Beam Software. Beam has the rights
to all the games distributed by Melbourne House in the 80's. In the US,
some of the Beam games, such as The Hobbit, were distributed by
Addison-Wesley.

This came by as a result of an interview I have been making with
Philip Mitchell regarding his text adventure series based on Tolkien's
The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books. The interview will be
published in a future issue of Other Hands. Contact me or watch
comp.sys.sinclair for upcoming announcement if you are interested in the
details.

Anyway, i quote Mr. Mitchell's message:

"After discussion with the company directors I am glad to be able to say
that Beam has officially sanctioned electronic distribution of it's old
Spectrum and C64 (and Oric, BBC, Amstrad etc) games - provided that such
distribution is non-profit only. Please keep in mind that on some titles
(e.g. The Hobbit) there are other parties who have a vested interest in the
title and strictly speaking you would also need their permission."

If you want to confirm this, you can contact Beam through their Web site:
http://www.beam.com.au/

Subject: CATnips (epilog) - Don Thomas resigns from Atari
Date: 25 Nov 1996 23:32:22 GMT

CATnips... Jaguar tidbits from Don Thomas

CATnips (epilog)

You may like to know that I have submitted my resignation to Atari and have
determined that Thursday, August 15 will be my final day.

I have been at Atari since November 1989. I helped launch the Portfolio, which
enjoyed tremendous success early in it's life cycle. Later, I took on the role
as a specialist and helped represent Portfolio technology at specialty trade
shows, key account presentations and in exclusive development scenarios. More
recently, I have streamlined an effective customer service department pursuant
to the resources afforded by corporate direction. During much of this time, I
have made every effort to be accessible and active on CompuServe as well as
GEnie, Prodigy, our Web Site and a BBS I sustained privately in my home.

Prior to Atari, I worked at Federated Electronics stores and was known within
the organization for my prejudice for Atari brand computers and games. Much of
my software library was provided to Federated as samples and the software buyer
asked me to test the latest titles.

I purchased my first Atari product in the early 80's. The 2600 was financed on
my First Visa Card from a Video Concept store in Dallas, Texas. I was so
impressed with the technology that I taught myself programming and developed a
newspaper delivery game to present to my employer, the Dallas Times Herald,
long before Paperboy ever hit the coin-op arcades. Only the crash of the video
game industry in the mid 80's kept me from entering the industry during those
years.

My first computer was the TI99/4a and, later, the Commodore 64. But it wasn't
until I opened an Atari 400 box in my apartment that I developed a passion and
soon found myself hoarding every cool thing I could find. From Scott Adam's
adventures to my MPP1000c modem and Rana disk drives, I was virtually
possessed.

After the Tramiels took over Atari, I bought into their 16-bit computer line
hook, line and sinker.... and never regretted a single moment.

When the Tramiels acquired Federated in the late 80's, I thought I died and
went to heaven. For the first time, I met the likes of Neil Harris and Mr. Jack
Tramiel himself. During the day, I helped expand Atari exposure in Atari's new
chain of electronic stores. At night I honed my programming skills into a line
of software I called Artisan Software. I successfully, released a total of 5
titles under that label, all for Atari 16-bit computers.

In 1989, Atari was compelled to discontinue Federated operations and my career
became a casualty in Jack's business war. While seeking employment anywhere I
could, I dedicated time and energies into the Atari Revolution... a grass roots
movement dedicated to foster word-of-mouth for Atari's fine line of products.
In November, Atari hired me back and I met Bob Brodie, Frank Foster and a
brigade of personalties who have long left a permanent mark in the historical
remembrances of the world's longest surviving home computer/video game company.

On August 26, I will be joining the professionals at Sony Computer
Entertainment. As you undoubtedly know, the Sony Playstation is America's
number one choice in next generation technology. After examining the
opportunities that are out there, the PSX looks to me to be the most promising
long term video game investment and I am proud to become part of the PSX team.

Atari, the name and the products is directly responsible for so many things in
my life. Inclusive are personal development and the acquisition lifelong
friends. The Tramiel family is equally responsible for having enriched my life
with wisdoms that I will forever value. There will always be a special part of
my heart for Atari. There will always be an envy that I wasn't there during
more glorious days and always I will take pride in knowing that I worked my
hardest during Atari's most difficult times.

As you undoubtedly know, Atari has just completed a merger with JTS; a
reputable supplier of hard disk drive technologies. The terms of the merger
relegates Atari as a division of JTS and no longer is Atari an independent
corporate entity. Shares of stock are now traded by the symbol JTS. Atari's
staff as of next week will consist effectively of 4 people; all of which are
among the most proud and honorable I have ever known.

On behalf of Atari, past and present, thank you to everyone who supported us.
Atari will always be an institution in our hearts remembering the evolution of
Pong, Asteroids, Star Raiders, Major Havoc, Millipede and many more. Look for
Atari's afterlife in licensed titles for other systems.

I have every intention to continue frequenting the Atari support areas and you
will no doubt find me popping up in a PSX forum near you! I'll look forward to
seeing you there.

Subject: New version of PC Xformer at emulators.com
Date: 25 Nov 1996 23:34:38 GMT

From: brasoft@coho.halcyon.com (Darek Mihocka)
Date: 29 Aug 1996 20:40:19 GMT

Many people have been wondering what the hell happened to the PC Xformer
upgrade that was supposed to be released last month and have been
sending me nasty email. Let me explain.

First of all, my company Branch Always Software now has a new name:

    EMULATORS, INC!

We also have a new web page at:

    http://www.emulators.com/

Most of the delay in introducing the new versions has been due to delays
in getting the domain name registered, getting our internet provider to
get their act together, and getting the new company together.

Unlike Branch Always Software which only dealt in Atari 8-bit an Atari
ST emulators, Emulators Inc. will develop and market non-Atari emulators
as well.

As far as PC Xformer goes, two new upgrades are in the works:

PC Xformer 3.6 is an upgrade to the DOS version of Xformer that most of
you already use. A new demo version of PC Xformer 3.6 will also be made
available on the new web site starting next week. PC Xformer 3.6 will be
in stores later in September.

PC Xformer 4.0 (a.k.a. Xformer 96) is the new Windows version of
Xformer. Although it is not ready to ship yet, we will be posting
"as-is" beta versions of it on our web page for you to try and give
feedback on. Xformer 96 should be in stores in the next few months.

Those of you with Atari ST computers will also be interested in the new
Gemulator demo which will also be available on the web page starting
September 3. So hope to see you there.

By the way, does anyone know what the status is of the So. California
show that was scheduled for Sep. 21? I'd love to come down and demo the
new products but I haven't heard anything first about that show or any
other show coming up. If you have any info about upcoming shows send me
an email.

Subject: Pokey the NEW Atari 800/800XL/5200 emulator released
Date: 25 Nov 1996 23:35:02 GMT

From: mhill@one.net (Mike)
Date: Sat, 31 Aug 1996 22:26:40 GMT

Everyone,

8/31/1996

Pokey version 0.60 has officially been released to the masses!

Pokey is a FREEWARE Atari 800/800XL/5200 emulator for MSDOS systems.
I recommend a Pentium for decent emulation. Pokey has alot of great
features. Here is just a highlight. Check out my web page for more
detailed info.

* Runs on MSDOS Systems (Pentium Peferred)
* 800/800 XL emulation
* 5200 game console emulation
* Run 8K/16K/OSS Super Carts
* 320 X 200 screen (adjustable) or Mode X (320 X 240 or 360 X 240)
* Supports up to two PC joysticks (swapple on the fly or upon loading)
* DLI and VBI supported.
* All antic modes
* Player Missle Graphics with collision detection
* GTIA graphics
* Reads XFD and ATR disk images
* Supports loading disk images on the fly in slots D1-D8 (menu driven)
* Horizontal and vertical fine scrolling
* System Monitor
* FREEWARE!!!!!! If you like it drop me a line, send me a postcard,
heck Ill take money too!

Im working right now on the following

* Sound Support (Soundblaster Compatibles)
* 4 Joystick Support (using printer port joystick interface)
* Faster Emulation (right now it seems like you need a fast pentium
for decent emulation. Ill know more when you guys start testing!)
* Support for converting MSDOS files to Atari disk images on the fly
* Paddle support
* 5200 keyboard support. Since the 5200 doesn't have any console keys
and uses the keys on the joysticks to start I can't currently start my
only 5200 rom image (frogger).
* 5200 Joystick Support. Might be there now but since I only have
a 5200 Frogger cartridge image I can't start....Not sure if it works
yet.

Im looking for assistance on the following areas.

* 5200 rom images. A friend gave me his 5200 game console and about 15
cartridges. I don't have a way to transfer them to file so they are
useless right now. Any help here would be appreciated.

*5200 technical information. I have the Analog article on 5200
hardware but hope there is more.

My web page contains more information on Pokey and some links to other
8-bit sites/emulators, along with alot of credit to those who helped
me on the way! You will need to get the rom images from Xformer or
some other source as they are not included in the archive. I do have
a link for this on my page also.

So whats the url for the web paget? Read on! So go out now and grab
your copy of Pokey and drop me an email with some feedback!

Subject: Pokey Version 0.61 released! Now with new Sound Support!
Date: 25 Nov 1996 23:35:35 GMT

Date: Sun, 08 Sep 1996 08:05:57 GMT
From: mhill@one.net (Mike)

Everyone,

Pokey version 0.61 has been released and is up on my web page below.

Whats been added since version 0.60?

More games run. Ripoff (Analog Magazine) now runs!

Better 5200 joystick support.

And the main feature that was just added was Sound support when using
the Pokey printer port sound card. This is a card you can build for
about $18-$25 US dollars (or less) that puts the Pokey sound chip used
in your Atari 800 on a small cicuit board with a few other chips. It
bascially gives you 100 percent accurate sound emulation of a real
Atari 8-bit.

It has some major pluses. Some of the obvious being that the sound is
dead nuts on the original. The emulation is very easy to code, there
is very little CPU overhead involved. You can plug the output of the
Pokey card right into your Sound Cards Line in.

The Pokey web page contains the latest version of the Pokey emulator
and an archive with a schematic for the Pokey printer card, part
listings, test program, and programming documentation for other
emulator authors to include in their emulators. I have been in touch
with other 8-bit Atari emulator authors and almost all seem very
interested in supporting the pokey sound card.

I also have plans to possibly build an internal PC card version that
wont waste your printer slot and will work better with a slower PC. If
you are electronics shy, or would rather have a PC card version, drop
me an email letting me know, and how much you would be willing to pay
for a real etched (no wires) PC board version. If there is enough
support I will have some made and send out tested Pokey sound cards.
I plan on releasing info for this version to developers also.

So grab the latest copy of Pokey off my page (its free and will always
be free!). While your there check out the Pokey Sound Card stuff two.
Download those schematics and build yourself a card! Im having a ball
playing Mule and Archon with actual Atari sound!

All,

I just released version 0.62 of Pokey the Atari 800/XL/5200 Emulator.

Whats new in version 0.62

Limited Keyboard emulation of the Joystick.

Faster emulation. Some games that were a little slow should run
better now.

And just in case you missed last weekends announcment. Pokey supports
sound (as of version 0.61) through the Pokey printer port card.
Specifications, parts lists, and test programs for the project are up
on my Web page listed below.

You can also get the latest version of Pokey from my Web Page below.

You will find screen shots of pokey running various games also. Im
looking at adding some samples of the Pokey card playing some of our
favorites.

Did you hear anyone say "Goodbye"?
==================================
by Donald A. Thomas, Jr. (10/4/96)

It's odd to imagine an institution, which was as big and as powerful as Atari
once was, to have been shut down in recent days. The real amazement for me is
that it was all accomplished without a measurable flinch from within or outside
the gaming industry. I can understand that gamers wanted to push Pong out the
door early in the timeline. I can appreciate that the classics such as Missile
Command and Asteroids do not push 32-bit and 64-bit systems to any
technological limits. I know all these things intellectually, but the heart
cannot face the truth that the world and the corporate machine known as Atari
could not find an amicable way to coexist.

On Tuesday, July 30, 1996, Atari Corporation took each and every share of it's
company (ATC), wrapped them all in a tight bundle and presented them to JTS
Corporation; a maker and distributor of hard disk drives. On Wednesday, the
shares were traded under the symbol of JTS. Within a few weeks, the remaining
staff of Atari that were not dismissed or did not resign, moved to JTS'
headquarters in San Jose, California. The three people were assigned to
different areas of the building and all that really remains of the Atari
namesake is a Santa Clara warehouse full of unsold Jaguar and Lynx products.

It was only as long ago as mid '95 that Atari executives and staff believed
things were finally taking a better turn. Wal*Mart had agreed to place Jaguar
game systems in 400 of their Superstores across the country. Largely based on
this promise of new hope and the opportunities that open when such deals are
made, Atari invested heavily in the product and mechanisms required to serve
the Wal*Mart chain. But the philosophical beliefs of the Atari decision makers
that great products never need advertising or promotions, put the Wal*Mart deal
straight into a tailspin. With money tied up in the product on shelves as well
as the costs to distribute them to get there, not much was left to saturate any
marketplace with advertising. While parents rushed into stores to get their
kids Saturns or PlayStations, the few that picked up the Jaguar were chastised
by disappointed children on Christmas day.

In an effort to salvage the pending Wal*Mart situation, desperate attempts to
run infomercials across the country were activated. The programs were
professionally produced by experts in the infomercial industry and designed to
permit Atari to run slightly different offers in different markets. In spite of
the relatively low cost of running infomercials, the cost to produce them and
support them is very high. The results were disappointing. Of the few thousand
people who actually placed orders, many of them returned their purchases after
the Holidays. The kids wanted what they saw on TV during the day! They wanted
what their friends had! They wanted what the magazines were raving about!

In early 1996, Wal*Mart began returning all remaining inventory of Jaguar
products. After reversing an "advertising allowance" Atari was obligated to
accept, the net benefit Atari realized was an overflowing warehouse of
inventory in semi-crushed boxes and with firmly affixed price and security
tags. Unable to find a retailer willing to help distribute the numbers required
to stay afloat, Atari virtually discontinued operations and traded any
remaining cash to JTS in exchange for a graceful way to exit the industry's
back door.

Now that JTS has "absorbed" Atari, it really doesn't know what to do with the
bulk of machines Atari hoped to sell. It's difficult to liquidate them. Even at
liquidation prices, consumers expect a minimal level of support which JTS has
no means to offer. The hundreds of calls they receive from consumers that track
them down each week are answered to the best ability of one person. Inquiries
with regard to licensing Atari classic favorites for other applications such as
handheld games are handled by Mr. John Skruch who was with Atari for over 13
years.

In spite of Nintendo's claim that their newest game system is the first 64-bit
game system on the market, Atari Corporation actually introduced the first
64-bit system just before Christmas in 1993. Since Atari couldn't afford to
launch the system nationwide, the system was introduced in the New York and San
Francisco markets first. Beating the 32-bit systems to the punch
(Saturn/PlayStation), Atari enjoyed moderate success with the Jaguar system and
managed to lure shallow promises from third-party companies to support the
system. Unfortunately, programmers grossly underestimated the time required to
develop 64-bit games. The jump from 8-bit and 16-bit was wider than
anticipated. In addition, Atari was already spread thin monetarily, but were
required to finance almost every title that was in development.

After the initial launch, it took Atari almost a year before an assortment of
games began to hit store shelves. Even then, having missed the '94 Holiday
Season, many of the planned titles were de-accelerated to minimize problems
caused by rushing things too fast. Consumers were not happy and retailers were
equally dismayed. The few ads that Atari was able to place in magazines were
often stating incorrect release dates because that information changed almost
every day although magazines deadline their issues up to 120 days in advance.

It was in 1983 that Warner Communications handed Jack Tramiel the reins of
Atari. By this time, Atari was often categorized as a household name, but few
households wanted to spend much money on new software and the systems were
lasting forever. No one needed to buy new ones. That, combined with Warner's
obscene spending, amounted to a *daily loss* of over $2 million. Atari was
physically spread all over the Silicon Valley with personnel and equipment in
literally 80 separate buildings; not considering international offices and
manufacturing facilities. Mr. Tramiel took only the home consumer branch of
Atari and forced Warner to deal with the arcade division separately. Within a
few years, Jack took the company public, introduced an innovative new line of
affordable 16-bit computers and released the 7800 video game system.

To accomplish these miracles for Atari, Jack implemented his "business is war"
policies. While people who publicly quoted his statement often felt that policy
meant being extremely aggressive in the marketplace, the meaning actually had
closer ties to Tramiel's experience as a concentration camp survivor. Of the 80
buildings in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara and Milpitas, almost every one of them were
amputated from Atari's body of liabilities. The people, the work, the heritage,
the history were fired or liquidated. Those who survived were unsympathetically
required to fill in the gaps and while most tried, few actually found a way to
be successfully do what a dozen people before them did. Atop the mountain, Jack
pressed with an iron thumb. All Fed/Ex mailings were required to be
pre-approved by one of a handful of people. "Unsigned" purchase orders went
unpaid regardless of the urgencies that inspired their creation. Employees
found themselves spending valuable time trying to find ways around the system
to accomplish their jobs. Many of them lost their jobs for bending the rules or
never finding a way to make things work. As horrible as it all sounds, it
actually was the only way to protect Atari as a company and give it a chance to
survive as it did and did very well.

Jack's introduction of the 16-bit computer was initially hearty in the United
States but it went extremely well in Europe. Europeans were not accustomed to
"affordable" technology and although the Atari computers were not IBM
compatible, it didn't matter because people could afford them. Jacks' private
laugh was that the computers were sold at prices much higher in Europe than
Americans were willing to pay. As a result, most of the machines made were
being shipped to European destinations to capture the higher margin. This
enraged the people in the United States that had been Atari loyalists. While
waiting months for stores to take delivery domestically, international
magazines were touting ample supplies. Those in the know within the U.S. became
dismayed. The remainder never knew Atari was slowly abandoning the value of
Atari's name recognition as it became easier and easier to forget some
assuming Atari had long filed for bankruptcy.

On a technical level, Atari 16-bit computers were designed beyond their time.
For less than $1,000, consumers could enjoy "multimedia" before the phrase was
ever really widely used. The icon-based working environment proceeded Windows
popularity although the essential attributes of the two environments were very
similar. MIDI was built-in and became an instant hit in the high-end music
industry. Tasks were activated and manipulated with a mouse and the system
accepted industry standard peripherals such as printers, modems and diskettes.

With all the genius that went into the technology of the machines, very little
of equivalent genius went into the promoting and marketing the machines. Mr.
Tramiel was the founder of Commodore Business Machines. When he introduced the
PET computer in 1977, Jack discovered he didn't have to call a single
publication. Instead they all flocked to his door demanding an opportunity to
see the product. News magazines. Science Journals. Business newsletters.
Newspaper reporters. They were all there with microphone, camera and pen in
hand. And they kept coming back. Adding a switch, announcing a new 4K
application or signing a new retailer were all big stories the press wanted to
handle.

Today, a new video game announcement may generate a request from any of the
dozens of gaming magazines for a press release, but a lot of costly work has to
be done to assure fair or better coverage. Editorial people are literally
swamped with technical news. Samples are mailed regularly to their attention.
Faxes fly in through the phone lines and e-mail jams up their hard drives. It
takes a lot to grab their attention.

While Atari retained hopes to be successful with the Jaguar, Atari's marketing
people were fighting established standards in the industry with severe
handicaps. Since cartridges (the Jaguar was/is primarily a cartridge-based
system) were so expensive, editorial people were required to return them before
new ones would be sent. Editorial people like to assign review projects. So
finding cartridges they sent out was not always easy to do. Additionally,
reviewers often love their work because they get to keep what they write about.
Regardless, the few magazines willing to cover Atari products were more often
turned away because of a lack of programmable cartridges or any number of other
indecisive barriers. In-store signs and posters were sometimes created, but
many retail chains charge premiums to manufacturers that want to display them.
Some direct mail campaigns were implemented, but Atari often could not afford
to keep those things being advertised on schedule. Therefore, the
advertisements were published and distributed, but the product was not
available.

Clearly, Jack's experience with the world beating a path to the door of a
company making a better mousetrap no longer applied. The world had revolved a
few times beneath him and he never noticed. The tactics used to successfully
sell Commodore computers were simply antiquated notions from the past.
Meanwhile, Sony launches the PlayStation with over $500 million in marketing
funds. Today, the PlayStation is considered the most successful next-generation
gaming machine throughout the world. Sony bought the market. Tramiel's Atari
never learned how to do that. Actually, they never could afford it anyway.

After the 1990's got underway, Europe as well as the rest of the world,
discovered that IBM-compatible computers were becoming more powerful and more
affordable. The world always did want computers at home just like in the office
and companies like Dell and Gateway exemplified the industry's trend toward
home-based office computers. As a result, companies like Commodore, Atari and
Next couldn't compete any longer. While the dedicated user base of each of them
felt abandoned by these companies having to leave the computer market, the
inevitable prevailed. Commodore jumped ship, Next changed business goals
completely and Atari invested what they had left in the Jaguar game system.
Even today, Apple is kicking and screaming. As good as Apple was at creating a
huge niche for themselves, they focused more heavily on education. When kids
grow up and get jobs, they want business machines. IBM was always the business
standard.

When one examines the history of Atari, an appreciation can grow for how many
businesses and people were a part of the game over the years. Chuck E. Cheese
Pizza was started by Atari's founder, Mr. Nolan Bushnell. Apple Computer was
born in a garage by ex-Atari employees. Activision was founded by Ace Atari
programmers. The list goes on and on.

But for some pathetic reason Atari's final days came and went with no tribute,
no fanfare and no dignified farewells. Why? Where did all the talent go? Where
are all the archives? Where are the vaults? Where are the unpublished games and
where are the originals of those that were? Why has no company stepped forward
to adopt the remaining attributes Atari has to offer? Where are the creditors?
What has happened to all the properties and sites? Where are the databases,
warranty cards, promotional items, notes on meetings, unanswered mail? Who owns
P.O. Box 61657? Who goes to work in Atari's old offices? Where do consumers
have their systems fixed? Who is publishing new games? Who still sells Atari
products? Why are there still a lot of people talking about Atari on-line?

I'm an ex-Atari employee and proud to have been. I'm still an Atari devotee and
proud to be. To me, these are questions which all deserve an answer, but who
will ask them?

The best people to ask these questions are those who have exposure to the
public. If you believe Atari left us without saying goodbye, contact Dateline
at dateline@nbc.com. If you REALLY believe, then send this article to 10 of
your friends in e-mail. AND if YOU REALLY, REALLY believe, mail a few to
newspapers or other news programs. A letter in your own words would be great!

I'd spend money for a thorough retrospect on Atari. Wouldn't you?

Wouldn't it at least be nice to say "Goodbye"?

We at ACEC have listened intently to the input of those who have
attended our event in the past so as to make them happy. This is what we
have done this year:

- Some unhappy people have told us, "ACEC, why do you hold this event in
the middle of the worst winter weather that Ohio has to offer?"

Our response this year is to move the event from December to November,
where the ending of fall tapers into a somewhat less harsh climate
(we hope).

- Some other not completely satisfied people have told us, "ACEC, why do
you host this event on a weekday making it almost necessary to risk
getting a speeding ticket or causing an accident to make it here whilst
braving the idiotically harsh elements of Ohio's December"

Our response this year is to not only include the above point but to also
move the date from its well known Wednesday slot and bring it to a lesser
known Saturday slot.

- Some other people afflicted by unbalanced Chi have told us, "ACEC, why
do you host this event so late in the evening that I can't see the cops
as they deviously hide behind the darkened snowdrifts on the splendid
  Ohio Winter Interstates?"

Our response this year to appease these brethren was to not only include
the above two points, but also change the schedule to a more brighter
timeframe (we hope) of 1 to 4PM.

- Even another group of do-gooders wanting to improve our event told us,
"ACEC, why don't you guys serve food at this thing?"

Our response this year is, well, you just can't please everybody can you?
