One of the NON-Modem members of our sig support staff would
like to know if there is a program that will transfer the
programs and files from a Cartridge or Tape to a diskette.

He uses both the 800XL and 1200XL systems.

        There are software systems to
do both. Check the Alpha Systems adds
in Antic and Analog or hunt around for
old copies of K-DOS (for tape back up)
and Cart. Clone for the cartridges.
        Note, however: the Supreme
Court has ruled that backing up ROM's
is illegal under copyright law due to
the "permanent" nature of the storage
medium. Tapes and Disks are OK because
of deterioration and easy accidental
erasure. Transferring tape to disk is
questionable, but can be defended on
the Atari due to the unstable nature of
the Atari tape drive system. Obviously, distributing copied software is illegal
and not in our best interests: How much
new Atari 8-bit software have you seen
lately?
