From: aa201 Subject: Cartridge/Tap to Diskette Date: Sun Jul 30 09:29:54 1989 One of the NON-Modem members of our sig support staff would like to know if there is a program that will transfer the programs and files from a Cartridge or Tape to a diskette. He uses both the 800XL and 1200XL systems. Doc White, aa201 Science Fiction Sig Sysop ** Answered by JOHN SUCHY (aa271) on Sun Sep 13 12:42:43 1987 ** There are software systems to do both. Check the Alpha Systems adds in Antic and Analog or hunt around for old copies of K-DOS (for tape back up) and Cart. Clone for the cartridges. Note, however: the Supreme Court has ruled that backing up ROM's is illegal under copyright law due to the "permanent" nature of the storage medium. Tapes and Disks are OK because of deterioration and easy accidental erasure. Transferring tape to disk is questionable, but can be defended on the Atari due to the unstable nature of the Atari tape drive system. Obviously, distributing copied software is illegal and not in our best interests: How much new Atari 8-bit software have you seen lately? Your Co-sysop John E. Suchy aa271 Thanks for asking.
