From: aa399@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Len Stys) Subject: Re: MS-DOS machines Reading Atari 8-bit Disks - ASG Date: Wed May 30 14:52:08 1990 In a previous article, ac721@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Aron Gamman) says: > > >I will be purchasing an MS-DOS machine in the near future and I was >wondering if there was any way you could read an disk from an 8-bit disk. > >I know I could make a null-modem but, I was thinking of something less >complex. Aron, I would like to further a reply by Mark on reading an Atari 8-bit disk on an IBM. There IS INDEED a program to do it. I have seen it in the public domain section of major IBM bulletin board systems. I don't remember the name but it will not run graphic programs but it should be able to read text, etc. When I read the instructions for it, it said, "Ok, all you IBM users, you don't have to leave the 8-bit world just because you moved to a different computer." And it gave information on how to run the program. If I am correct, it was made to run disks formatted with DOS 2.1. However, the author's name and address is on the program and he may have written a better version of the emulator. Incidently, I hate to see users leave the Atari world even if it doesn't look like the grass is as green as it should be. I have a feeling that Atari will come back to the U.S. and make an impression, perhaps with the STe. The STs can emulate IBM, Atari 8-bits, Apple IIs, and Macintosh. Sure it may cost you up to $1000 alone to get all the emulators but then you will have a system for everything instead of just "IBM only." Thanks for your question! Len Stys - Atari SIG - 5-30-90 -- P.S. - I did not answer your question on how to transfer the information on to IBM format but I hoped this help. --
