ATARIUSER MAGAZINE will be the Guest in the Real-Time-Conference on
GEnie this coming Wednesday night, May 1, at 10 PM, 7 PM Pacific time.
AtariUser is the new FREE Atari monthly magazine, formerly ST JOURNAL.
John Nagy, John King Tarpinian, and Steve Lesh will be on hand to
discuss the new all-Atari magazine. Attendees will get an extra free
offer... be there.
The crew of AtariUser will be attending the conference from the CODEHEAD
QUARTERS BBS, at the birthday party for the first year of operation of
the BBS. Ron Berinstein, host of the CodeHead Quarters system and PD/
Shareware reviewer for Z*NET and AtariUser, also manages the Vine Street
Bar and Grill in Hollywood, California, and the conference will end in
an appreciation party for all the system users. As the name implies,
CodeHead Quarters BBS is the home base for support of John Eidsvoog and
Charles F. Johnson's CODEHEAD SOFTWARE.

HIGH RESOLUTION: Viewpoints and Responses from our Atari Community
Welcome to ATARIUSER MAGAZINE by John Nagy, Editor In Chief
You are holding a rare commodity in today's world: an Atari specific
monthly magazine. In fact, ATARIUSER may be the U.S.'s ONLY monthly
commercial Atari magazine-format publication. That's both an exciting
opportunity and a heavy commitment.
We USED to be ST JOURNAL, a widely praised but relatively low-production
ST specific glossy magazine. Despite ST JOURNAL's popularity (where it
could be found), we could not afford to print more than 10,000 copies
with the ad revenues we were earning... and couldn't raise more revenues
without increasing circulation. Even while our acceptance and quality
increased with each issue, the numbers just weren't going to work.
Enter ATARIUSER MAGAZINE. Steve Lesh of Quill Publications and I had
been kicking around the concept of doing a dealer-distributed free
computer magazine for quite a while. There are several non-specific
computer regional magazines that have done well in the "free" format,
particularly on the West coast. We decided to risk trying to do the
first national (international, really) "free" distribution magazine. By
a series of trade-offs of production numbers against printing and
binding methods, ad rates, and distribution schemes, we think it is
going to work. We even figure to be able to clinch the title for
largest circulation Atari magazine in the USA... and provide a FREE
product. Every month! I agreed to become the editor and Steve will
provide his outstanding layout and art direction. Also from ST JOURNAL
are Kevin Horn heading up advertising, Gantry Gappmayer, John King
Tarpinian as Assistant Editor, and a number of contributors from the old
JOURNAL staff.
You may have noticed the $1 "Bookstore Price" on the cover... and some
of you may have had to pay it. Sorry, but some major bookstores and
businesses simply can't and won't cope with a totally free magazine.
Rather than have to give up the substantial potential circulation, we
allow them to charge meagerly, if they must. This is not an uncommon
solution for other, similar "free" publications... but see "Getting
AtariUser, below!
AtariUser will cover the ENTIRE Atari computer product lineup, including
the TT, STe, ST, MEGA, MEGA/STe, Portfolio, Lynx, and even the out-of-
production Atari 8-bit series of computers. And as Atari's product
family grows in the coming months, so will we. We'll focus on the facts
that will make life easier for ATARI USERS. Every month we will try to
cut to the meat of what is happening, what is available, what it can do
for you, and how to get it. And we'll do it FAST, with less than two
weeks between final edits and distribution.
We are maintaining close alliances with other magazines and news
agencies to be sure our information is as current as possible. We'll
exchange material with Z*NET INTERNATIONAL ATARI NEWS SERVICE, Germany's
PD JOURNAL, and several other foreign magazines.
Our departments will regularly include all Atari product lines, plus
rotating focuses on DTP, communications, graphics, MIDI applications,
new software and game reviews, top PD and SHAREWARE software, user group
news, emulation, hardware hacking, etc. And I'll be keeping you current
with ATARI NEWS AND COMMENT, continuing the column I've done for years
in COMPUTER SHOPPER magazine.
You'll find two specific constructs recurring throughout our pages:
* the ALERT BOX
This will be at the top of each department's column with quick news and
facts about the subject in general. You'll be able to keep up with
developments in each department with a glance.
* the RESOURCES
Each month we'll feature a RESOURCE FILE for one or more of our
departments, giving a comprehensive listing of available products,
dealers, user groups, BBS's, etc.
We're continuing the advertiser and product indexes that were popular in
ST JOURNAL. We'll even do something unheard of since Kris Kringle
suggested MACY's in MIRACLE ON 34th STREET...recommend you to the OTHER
Atari publications, let you know what each of them feature in their
current issue, and how to subscribe!

ATARI MARKET IMPROVES
Sales of the Atari product have reduced over the several months in New
Zealand according to Mr Alex Davidson. However there is light at the
end of the tunnel as sales start to pick up for the first time in three
months. The STe has proved to be popular with the home user. When
asked where the new Atari TT was, Davidson said it would not be here for
sometime to come.
LINOTYPE-HELL TO INCLUDE CIS PRODUCTS
Barneyscan announced this week that Linotype-Hell will include selected
Color Imaging Systems (CIS) products in its highly successful Series
1000 Scanned Color Publishing System. The agreement includes
Barneyscan's CIS 4520 multi-film format transparency scanner, QuickScan
image acquisition software and CIS ColorAccess color separation
software. The Hi-Performance version of the Scanned Color System
includes Apple Macintosh Workstations, page layout software, 19-inch,
24-bit display system, Linotronic 330 imagesetter at 3386 dpi output
resolution, Cromacheck Dry Color Proofing System and the Barneyscan CIS
4520 multi-film format scanning system with CIS ColorAccess color
separation software.
COMPUTER SYSOP CHARGED
A 25-year-old computer user has been charged with sexually assaulting
two teenage brothers who were drawn to his home because of the
electronic bulletin board he ran, according to police. Michael Labbe
and an associate, Jeffrey Whitman, 23, both of Warwick, were released
Monday after a bail hearing in Superior Court. Authorities allege
Labbe molested the teenagers in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Whitman allegedly
molested them in 1990. Labbe met the boys through his computer bulletin
board service, which he called Eagle's Nest because he is an Eagle
Scout, investigators said. The service, begun in 1984, is the largest
of its kind in the state, and the boys were 16 and 14 when they met
Labbe. They frequently visited his Lincoln Park home, where his
computer system was set up in the basement. The bulletin board run by
Labbe and Whitman is geared to hobbyists and teenagers. Labbe was a
leading member of an organization called Relay Net, which is touted as
the second largest computer bulletin board network in the world. He has
been suspended as a member of its steering committee because of his
arrest.

Goldleaf Publishing. Most of you are familiar with Goldleaf as the
publisher of Wordflair and Wordflair II.
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Thank you Jeff. We are pleased to announce
several new products. We have broken our offerings into three major
product lines: Document processing, Digital PrePress and Programming/
Utilities. We are proud to announce that we have acquired exclusive
marketing and distribution rights for North America for the HiSoft
products and the 3K ComputerBild software and hardware products along
with a host of hardware peripherals to provide complete publishing
systems.
These PrePress and Document Processing solutions more than hold their
own against Mac and PC software. We are part of an alliance with ISD,
SoftLogik and Atari to bring high end publishing solutions to the North
American publishing (vertical) market. This alliance is known as the
Direct to Press solutions, and Atari has formed a new division, the
Professional Systems Group to address the alliance's vertical market
efforts.
After an initial launch at CEPS (Corporate Electronic Publishing
Systems) in Chicago, we are very happy to state that the Direct to Press
solutions turned some heads around about the Atari computer as a viable
publishing platform.
<[Larry Rymal] LRYMAL> Hi, glad to see you here! In the recent years,
ST wordprocessors have been a bit stagnant, in spite of an aggressive
market entry during the mid-80's. How do your products compare to Mac-
type document processors (MacWrite II-ugh!)?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Hi, this is John Fox. We think Wordflair II
compares very favorably to word processors such as MacWrite, MS Word,
etc. In addition to giving you multiple font and point sizes, we have
a built in database, pastable calculation cells, page layout tools, and
elegant graphics handling. So, we don't just think we "hold up" against
other products on the PC and Mac, we think we offer something
categorically different: "Live compound document processing" which we
take to mean as the combination of text, graphics, merged data and
calculation on a single page. To do what Wordflair II does as a single
program you would have to use several programs in a "multitasking"
environment.
<[Mike] M.SQUIRE> Lauren, I'd like to start my question by complementing
you and your collegues at Goldleaf for the fine customer service that
you're offering online on GEnie. What I'd like to know is will Goldleaf
be selling Wordflair II at the Windsor show and if so, will you be
offering any "show specials"?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> thanks Mike. The answer is yes, we will have
a show special for many of our new products.
<[Dave] D.SHORR> Does WordFlair II come with a GDOS printer driver for
the Atari SMM804? My previous GDOS program, WordUp 3, did not provide
one; its Epson and Gemini 9 pin drivers would not work with the SMM804
because they required 240DPI graphics resolution. This prevented me
from using this 'document processor''s more powerful features.
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Yes, we fully support this printer with screen
and printer fonts.
<[Randy] R.NOAK> If I purchase Retouche, will there be an upgrade path
to Retouche Pro?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Yes. This is generally true with all our
products. We try to offer special deals to our registered users.
<[Hugh] H.FALK> technical question: but first thanks Ron? for the
upload of the new assign.sysfile for the TT. I have a TT with two megs
and a SLM804 laser. My fonts now load but I still can't print. The
print option is grayed out. Does WordFlair II know I dont have enough
memory and won't let me print? (Shouldn't it at least try to print and
say "out of memory") Or could something else be wrong?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> No, unfortunately, GDOS requires at least 2.5
megs to print to an SLM 805 or 605 printer. You can never have too much
RAM, especially on a TT. Upgrade that puppy, and you will be very happy
with FSM GDOS's fast scaling and Font Scaling routines.
<[Leland] L.DUMAS> Will there be another upgrade from 1st word plus? My
wife likes me to buy things on sale.
<JEFF.W> 1st Word Plus? That's another company, Leland. GST Holdings
does 1st Word Plus.
[Leland] L.DUMAS> You had a trade in offer earlier
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> If you mean will we repeat our Swap Offer, the
answer is not likely. We had a fantastic response, but don't want to
cut into our dealer base. Please support dealers wherever possible!
<J.D.BARNES> John, I think that Wordflairs very courageous for doing
this. I wonder how much demand you really see for these kinds of
products in the Atari marketplace.
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> We don't see a huge demand existing within the
installed base. We intend to create a whole new market that will bring
many sophisticate new users to the Atari machine. This will benefit the
entire existing user base by making the market more viable and
interesting for other developers. Don't forget what DTP did for the
Mac!
<J.DOSSEY> How does WordFlair II compare to Pagestream? Thanks.
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Wordflair II is a document processor that has
many of the page layout features of a Page layout program such as the
excellent PageStream. Wordflair II is great for quick compound
documents, intelligent forms and invoices, proposals and the like.
PageStream is much more full featured and the two products are not
intended to compete. They meet different needs. Our goal in designing
WF II is that it will comfortable co-exist with most programs on the
market as its blend of features is unique.
<R.MONFORT1> Thanks what is the Image speeder and Didot?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> The ImageSpeeder is specially configured tower
that contains a TT, two special boards (one is for super fast graphics
co-processing, the other a direct hardware link to a Hell image setter),
storage devices, peripheral ports, and a beefy power supply. The Image
Speeder is designed to be used as a complete digital pre press work
station. Didot Line Art is a professional line art and type design.
<JEFF.W> Do you prices to announce at this time for these products?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> program. All of our pre-press tools take
advantage of the hardware based halftone screening capabilites of the
Image Speeder.

our TT long enough to test it. But will do so soon. We suspect the

<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> HighSpeed Pascal is a complete, integrated
Pascal compiler system, compatible with Turbo Pascal 5 on the PC. Very
fast compilation speed with a multi-window interactive editor, linker,
assembler and on-line help. This is an ideal product for porting to and
from the PC.
<D.BARTLETT1> How does Goldleaf market their ST line, without an
American ST Magazine?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> What do you mean without an American ST
magazine? We advertise and sent editorial info to Current Notes, AIM,
ST Informer and AtariUser. In addition to this, the digital pre press
line will be marketed through industry wide media such as Publish!
American Typographer, Seybold Report and the like. We also market
through direct mail, and special dealer promotions.
<R.CARPENTE18> Will we see Wercs and Lattice C? And when is their
availability?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Sure will. Lattice C 5 and Wercs are available
now. Please see our upload for more info. Lattice C TT and DevPac TT
are on their way. Watch for special pricing in the next issue of ST
Informer.
<D.D.MARTIN> Can any of your products handle such things as color
trapping, color separations (CMY etc) and Postscript graphics etc for
output to a linotronic?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Color trapping is controlled through our page
composition program Didot Professional. This program does full CMYK
separations, as does Retouche Professional CD. Both programs print
Postscript to disk for output to a Linotronic. For highest quality and
speed, you would output directly to a Hell Image Setter. Eventually the
entire Lino/Hell range of image setter will be supported by the Image
Speeder. While Postscript is a great standard, its halftone screening
algorythms and processing speed is inadequate for professional quality
work. We use a proprietary system for outputting complete rasterized
images directly to the video port of an image setter. This system of
pre rasterization ensures that a page is exposed in one smooth motion.
The higher quality screening process eliminate problems of registration,
banding and moire patterns associated with Postscript.
In sum, our system reads and writes proprietary file formats (Type I and
Calamus fonts, TIFF images, EPS and PS) but when it comes to actually
producing camera ready film, we think our system is superior.
<[JOHN MORALES] ATARI-MIDI> A two fold Question guys, what is Atari's
commitment to Goldleaf and how are they going to assist in helping you
reach the vertical markets..with your high end products.
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Atari has a very high level of commitment to
the Direct to Press solutions which include the products from ISD,
SoftLogik, and Goldleaf as developed by DMC, 3K ComputerBild and others
in Germany. I think that Atari has realized that the vertical
publishing market is one of its last opportunities to grab a piece of
the US computer market at a cost they can afford.
For the moment anyway, these products offer a technical lead over
similar products on the Mac and PC. Look for a bold presence at Seybold
in October, and alliance with high end VARS and resellers, and a much
improved marketing program.
<JEFF.W> Let's do another giveaway.....What is Harlekin?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Harlekin is a compendium of useful desk
accessories such as a: flexible scrap book, mini word processor, diary,

about a C++ compiler? Also when is the next MAJOR relese of WFII due?

<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Look at our upload for all the languages we
are offering. As for WFII, two more upgrades are planned for this year.
Registered users are always the first to know.
<[RICK] R.HARRIS34> I have several DT pub. & Text processors, but only
one, PS supports HP laserjet emulation, will most of your products
support a non atari laser printer?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Currently, GDOS support for the HP line of
printers is available from Migraph. The new FSM GDOS includes drivers
for a number of printers including the Deskjet and Laserjet. All of our
document processing and pre-press products will ultimately support the
FSM GDOS standard. WFII is one of the first to do so.
<[Dave] D.SHORR> I use DevPac ST 2.09 and would like to know what the
latest and greatest version is and what your upgrade policy will be.
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Please contact us for info on current versions
and upgrade policies. We will offers support for registered users by
phone and on GEnie.
<[John & TT030] J.FOURNIER> Do your products support advanced ST and TT
features like math co-processors and higher [color] graphics modes?
And when will we see FSM-GDOS?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> Yes. For instance Retouche Professional takes
advantage of TT medium res. Wordflair II runs in TT hi res. As for FSM
GDOS, ask Atari. Our understanding is 45-60 days. Whatever happens,
registered users of Goldleaf products will get the best possible price.
<J.D.BARNES> John, is the Image speed a VME product? does it use VME bus
technology?
<[Lauren/John] WORDFLAIR> No, it's actuallya stand alone machine that
takes advantage of VME and DMA.

Ethernet as the most viable networking solution. For more local needs,
we are anxious for Local talk, and floppy drives that read/write the
Mac and PC format at up to 1.44. How bout a Spectre ROM chip?
<DAVESMALL> Mac drives can be done, but most people don't prefer
SneakerNet when they can avoid it. I saw a decent Ethernet at Cebit in
the UNIX platforms there, plugged into VME, with a Mega extension card
if you needed it.

CALAMUS TUTORIAL - PART X

Multi-page, Multi-column Documents 3
=======================================================================

Retrieve your document from last session. At this point we have a four
page double-sided document layout with dissimilar header frames on its
odd and even pages, a visible page numbering system, but no text frames
or graphics.
PROTECT (FRAMES, FRAMES GENERAL FUNCTIONS) the header frames on pages
one and two. Protect prevents any alteration to their position or size.
Go back to page one (document page three).
Set HELP LINES VISIBLE, and SNAP TO HORIZONTAL/VERTICAL AUXILIARY LINES.
The first defines the frame positioning, the second is an aid to frame
placement. Go to TEXT, set text values to Justified (i.e. right as well
as left), leading 2.0, paragraph spacing 6.0, Times font, ink colour 1,
12 point. These will be our default values for text imported into the
document. In session 8 we created columns equals 3 for all pages.
Margins included 2.00 for the top, 1.25 bottom, 1.25 left, and 0.75
right.
Notice that although Calamus allows us to create a double-sided
document, the program is unable to display the necessary odd/even column
guide format correctly (toggle between pages one and two to see the
problem). Instead, we will be forced to re-display column guides
separately for the two different page formats. With the pointer tool
onscreen, create three frames for the three columns (the Snap-to feature
will ease placement). At this point we need to add Piping (text flow).
From the FRAMES icon pad, click on FRAMES SPECIAL FUNCTIONS. This icon
pad, which we used previously, contains the Piping functions. With this
document, unlike our previous, we need to add another element: piping
from page to page.
Piping is complex and, as you will probably find out, occasionally
frustrating to use. Keep to the following order. Highlight DISPLAY
PIPING CHAINS. Go to page one of your document and select the lefthand
text frame. Highlight the icon (upper right corner of pad) PIPING FROM
FRAME TO FRAME (it will stay highlighted until de-selected. With the
frame still selected, click on PIPING FROM LAST PAGE. A piping symbol
{>} will appear in the upper left corner of the frame, indicating Piping
from last page established. Click on the middle, then right frames.
The frame-to-frame piping symbol {-->} will appear in the bottom right
of the left and mid frames, showing text flow is established. Finish
piping on the page by clicking on PIPING TO NEXT PAGE. Move to page
two, and repeat the process: click on lefthand frame, PIPING FROM LAST
PAGE, middle frame, right frame, and PIPING TO NEXT PAGE (de-select HELP
LINES VISIBLE if it becomes difficult to see the text frames amongst
other lines). The piping symbol PIPING FROM FRAME TO FRAME on adjacent
pages will appear when both page layouts are complete.
Note that because you choose the piping order, it is possible to pipe to
frames which are neither adjacent, nor on the same page. We could just
as easily have ignored the middle frame on page one, and piped from the
lefthand to the righthand. (Or two separate frames placed in one column
guide -- but click off SNAP-TO AUXILIARY LINES before creating -- such
as you might find in a newsletter.)
We now need to copy our text frame layout (including its position) from
pages one and two to the following pages. Go to COPY LAYOUT (in the
PAGES drop-down menu) and select OK when a dialogue box appears. Move
to page two and repeat the process.
The dialogue box asks if you would like to repeat your layout on page
one (or two) to following odd (or even) pages until the end of the
document. Check pages three and four to see that they have received the
proper format. You could also copy the layout, instead, up to a
specified page number (although we would need more than the four in our
present document), and have later pages take a different form.
Let's change the layout on page one from 3 columns to 2. Select the
middle column. Click on DELETE FRAME OUT OF PIPING CHAIN. Highlight
SET AUXILIARY COLUMN GUIDES, and create a 2-column layout, but keep the
other values the same. DELETE (the trashcan in FRAME GENERAL FUNCTIONS)
the middle frame. Highlight SNAP TO AUXILIARY LINES and stretch the two
remaining text frames to new inner margins. Do not copy the new layout
from page one, it will only overwrite that on page three. This is
important if you want to add pages to the document. In that case, copy
the layout from pages three and two to pages beyond page four. Select
PAGE NUMBERING from the PAGES drop-down menu, and click on OK to display
page numbering on the new pages. Or, at this point, you can select a
different page numbering scheme, with a new start value (number or
letter). Experiment with your document format.
If we wanted to make space for graphic frames we could move, for
example, the bottom margin of the righthand frame on page one up to the
six inch mark (positioned with auxiliary lines), and the bottom margins
of both the mid and right frames to the six inch mark on page two. But
there is an easier way. Place a Raster graphic frame at the bottom of
page one, on top of the right text frame (but within its width). Import
a Raster graphic. On page two, create a Vector graphic frame which
overlaps (but not necessarily completely stretches the width of) two of
the three frames and import a drawing. If needed, set ideal size, then
PROPORTIONAL DRAWING for both, and resize for available space.
Now LOAD DICTIONARY, highlight HYPHENATION AFTER IMPORT ON, and import
your text file. Hyphenation prevents excessive word spacing when using
narrow columns and Justification. If everything is correct, your file
will flow from frame to frame as you move through the document. Text
will flow under the graphics we placed previously. Return to page one,
select the text frame beneath the graphic, go to FRAMES, FRAMES SPECIAL
FUNCTIONS (the question mark--for text frames), and click on PLACE TEXT
AROUND GRAPHIC (mid, top row--in midst of piping commands). Now select
the graphic frame and click again on PLACE TEXT AROUND GRAPHIC. Text
will reflow such that none will lay inside the graphic frame borders;
additional text length will be absorbed into remaining column space on
the document's last page.
On page two, select each text column separately, and flow text around
each. Click on a text frame, then PLACE TEXT OVER GRAPHIC (icon to
right of Place Text Around Graphic) when you want to remove text flow-
around. When in TEXT mode, text will appear to reflow into graphic
boundary, but will properly reformat when this icon-pad is exited.
Save your document.
Next session, I wrap up this introductory Calamus tutorial. Topics will
include the HLP file, macros, rotating text, merging documents, third
party utilities, tips, and whatever else can be fitted in. The week
after, I begin a column which will focus on Atari computers, software,
and its application to the high-end user base.

TQM ANNOUNCES STREE - HARD DISK SCAN

There's a file you *know* is on your hard disk somewhere but you can't
remember just where. Looks like it's time to dig out that unfriendly
TTP file finder. If you can remember where that is, and what you're
supposed to type in the launch box.
Or maybe installing a big new application has gone wrong. It seems to
have created new folders and files on several partitions, but you're not
sure what they're called or where they are. Looks like you'll have to
use the desktop to check each folder in turn. Or perhaps you could dig
out that command line shell and work out a simpler way to do it.
Perhaps not...
Makes you wonder why you bought a machine with a user-friendly graphical
user interface.
Maybe you should be using STree.
STree is an amazing new desktop accessory for the Atari ST/STE/TT which
lets you search for files on your hard disk matching a specification and
then manipulate them using a TT style desktop.
Just click on STree in the accessory menu and up pops a dialog box. You
can then enter your search specification, including:-
o File mask with full Unix(tm) style wildcarding.
o Drive partitions to search.
o Path to start searching from on each drive.
o Depth of folders to search down to.
o File attributes (read only, hidden, system & archive).
o Date stamp range.
o Time stamp range.
o File size range.
o ASCII or hex strings to search for within a file.
STree will then begin its search, building up a list of matching files.
Once this is complete, a window will open containing the list. From
here you can carry out all the standard file operations, just like the
Desktop: copy, move, delete, print, rename, change file attributes, text
file view, saving and printing the file list as well as being able to
sort the list by folder, filename, type, date and size. And there's the
same keyboard shortcuts you'll find on Atari's new desktop.

So, because I was up in the office slaving away at writing last week's
column the girls waiting down stairs in the restaurant for me and their
chance at my new custom jacuzzi didn't wait and went elsewhere! Proof
I guess that that everything software oriented doesn't have a Walt
Disney ending!
On a much better note... congratulations are in order! Yes folks step
right up and for the donation of one thin ten dollar bill you too can
enjoy a year of CodeHead Quarters BBS! And that's a promise CodeHead
Quarters BBS made good. May 1, 1991 marks our first birthday! CodeHead
Quarters BBS began with three users, 15 messages and about 15 files in
our download library. Now, thanks to the supporters and their interest
in the BBS CodeHead now sports about 1400 files in the download section!
Messages have risen up to about 13000! That's a lot of software and
computer talk in the space of just 12 months. The Birthday Party is at
Vine St. Bar & Grill on May 1st at 8:00 p.m. and you're all invited.

DCBITSET.ARC will set the archive bit on files for you provided that you
use TOS 1.0 or 1.2. This might provide the help you need if your back
up program requires that the archive bit be set.
COLORIMG.ARC will provide the programmer types amongst us and others
interested in ST & TT graphics with a verbose explanation of what those
color image files are all about. Some source code examples are also
provided.
P-38.SEQ will appeal to airplane fans! This is a .SEQ animation of a
CAD .3D2 P-38 Airplane flying over a canyon. 94,000 uncompressed bytes-
741 blocks.
VENUS.LZH has a Venus de Milo Sculpture (3D Animated Rendering) as its
feature subject. An animated 360-degree rotation converted from
Autodesk Animator to FILM format by David Ramsden. This 3D Rendering
looks beautiful in TT Hypermono (256-gray level) mode, but ST owners can
enjoy it. It uses a blue palette to simulate 16 shades on a standard
ST. I've also included an STe/TT/JRI gray scale palette for CyberPaint
owners with a machine that supports 16 RGB levels.
DICECH.ARC has Dice Check in it. With same you can check for bias in
your dice by each face or by groups of sides. Great for D&D or other
game players.
ROCK.ARC has a simple classic game of Rock-Scissor-Paper played against
the computer in it.
PORTABLE ADDICTION #000 contains a new monthly online newsletter for
people interested in the Lynx and Portfolio.
For those of you out there that use the PD terminal program UNITERM
(v.2.0e), XYZ2.MAC will give you a macro to making running XYZ.TTP (v.2
or later).
WHATDAY.LZH (freeware) will return various values to a program that
calls it depending upon what you ask of it. It can return the date in
two different formats and many other options. It will also write to a
file if you wish.
With all the current talk about the LA Police and whether the chief
should resign in the wake of publicly shown news coverage of an alleged
brutality case, the clip art contained in POLICE.ARC may seem timely.
SPL<>SD REPLAY <> SOUND DESIGNER is a pair of GFA v.2 programs which
allow you to take a REPLAY4 sound file and convert it to one in the
SOUND DESIGNER file format, or vice versa.
Ah, for some the sound of a hard drive spinning is poetry, for others it
is the look of a million colors available on screen, but for some it is
the work of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Though the program is only a
DEMO, BROWNDEM.ARC will allow you to see 5 of the 44 complete sonnets
she wrote for Robert Browning and examine them.
ACC13.ARC version 1.3 was posted this week. It will allow you to load
all of your accessories from an ACCS folder. It is an auto folder
program that fixes the prior versions known bugs.
So you want to see your software go so "Fast" that it will be hard to
see? Download TURBO20.TXT and find out what FAST TECHNOLOGY is up to..
They are announcing their TURBO20 20 Mhz accelerator!
If you live in the LA area you might of received a flyer announcing that
The Computer Network has TTs in stock.. In other parts of the country
check with your local dealer for availability. TT_ASSGN.ARC is a fully
commented GDOS file that you can run on your new TT along with GDOS 1.1
or newer versions of G+Plus. It has screen pointers for all the new TT
resolutions.
How well does Digispec work when converting GIF to SPC format? Well you
could spend your time trying it yourself, perhaps converting the picture
of an old barn or something, or, you could quickly download DSFO4_S.LZH
and view a female nude converted from GIF as no doubt an important part
of a unique scientific experiment!
PC BBS users may value the opportunity to download version 1.3 of
MaxiMiser, MAXMSR13.LZH, an ST Q-Mail reader. Still in development, but
useable.
UZSHL.PRG contains UZ_SH111.PRG a command shell for ST_UNZIP v.1.11.
This version corrects a few bugs that could be found in versions 1.0 and
1.10 and gives access to all of the commands available in ST_UNZIP.
Long command lines are now OK. This file wasn't ARCed or LZHed because
the program is already internally compacted.
QCNEW.LZH QuickCIS v1.60c This is the program file only, for
upgrading QuickCIS to the new version. See QWKCIS.TOS on CompuServe for
the full package including docs and support files.
RDYSTE.LZH Rdy for ste computers only! Rdy is a reset proof ramdisk.
IT WILL NOT WORK on PRE STE models!
