From: aa399@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Len Stys) Subject: Mar.09,1991 Atari SIG Expands Preview Date: Wed Apr 17 23:55:33 1991 On Saturday, March 9, 1991, the Atari SIGOps announced: Atari SIG users, As you can tell, the Cleveland Free-Net Atari SIG has undergone some changes. There has been no formal announcement of it since it is not completely done. It shouldn't be fully completed until the end of next week. But since we can't really wait that long to tell you about some of the areas, we'll briefly explain to you some of the new areas and what it is for. The "Programming/Developing Forum" is probably the biggest jump into helping a certain group of Atari users. If you are a programmer or are even thinking about programming for the Atari ST, this Forum is definetely for you. It has been put together by Pete Haller, a knowledgable person when it comes to programming and developing for Atari computers. The second area, which all you MIDI users should be using at this moment but maybe couldn't find it is the Atari MIDI Forum. This is located in the Special Application Forums section. It is probably realistic to say that over half of you reading this message has done some type of MIDI work with your ST. This is why this section was put up and if you didn't use it, you'd be missing out on some great future plans for that area. The third area is the "Product Info & Support Area". This is where there are many things yet to be done but should be completed shortly. In this area, there is an Atari Dealer listing, magazine directory, and separate areas for each Atari system. The areas are: 8-bit Computer Info & Support 16/32-bit Computer Info & Support Portfolio Palmtop Info & Support Lynx Portable Info & Support In each of these sections are specific areas to help you, the user, in choosing a product that is right for you. But WE CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH the importance of you contributing to these sections. It was established by a gamble that YOU would contribute to these areas. These areas can be accessed faster by typing the go commands for it: "Go Atari8" "Go Atari16" "Go Portfolio" "Go Lynx" YOU MUST take the time and write a review, a summary, or anything else that you can give to these sections. It can be the most valuable asset to the Atari SIG and to you if everyone makes it worth something. The last biggest section that the Atari SIG has added to it is the "Atari Computer Files" area. This section supports the 8-bit, ST, and Portfolio computer systems. It will be a "dumb" file area using UUENCODED files. It will be a little harder to use than regular file areas on your local BBS but there will be an advantage. Users, like yourself, who get a new program in their area of the United States, can upload it to this area so another person can get the program who might live on the opposite side of the country. Of course, there are many Clevelanders that will be using this area as well and the best stuff coming through FTP no doubt will be uploaded to these areas. There will most likely be a restriction of how many files we will have there but there will atleast be something. The "Atari Computer Files" section is not complete and we don't expect it to be finished until next week sometime. So just be patient. We need to make sure an area of its kind is done the correct way so it can remain easy to use even while being very busy. To those of you who are checking out the Atari SIG for the first time due to an article in a magazine publication or a posting on your local system, welcome! This Atari SIG, as you will find out is very different and unusual than what you have ever seen. Be a part of the new and energetic force determined to make your system, the best that it can possibly be. Thank you. Your Atari SIGOps --
